We saw the doctor today and he confirmed what I already knew, which is I've lost strength in my right arm, some in my left arm, and have lost strength in my fingers. The good news about my fingers/hands is that I still have good strength in my grip, I have just lost strength when it comes to moving my fingers from side to side, etc. (we forget the word he used). He said I still have good strength in my legs, even in spite of the couple of issues I've had. Even with these changes, he considers this slow progression.
He recommended I get the voice activated computer thingy for work so I can start learning how to use it to dictate my typing. He said they take some time to get used to so I should start now, so that if/when I lose my ability to type using my fingers I'll still be able to work by dictating.
We will start attending the ALS Clinic next month, which is much different than what Bob and I had pictured! (we thought it would be all of these patients in one room, but it's not!) Basically, we will be in a patient room by ourselves and we will get a visit from: a physical therapist, respiratory therapist, nutritionist, social services, etc. We will go to the clinic on March 6th and again 6-8 weeks later; they use the first two appointments as my baseline and will determine how frequently I need to go after that.
I make jokes with the doctor, many of which are sarcastic, and he actually complimented me on it today! He said that people who have my outlook typically do better, so Bob and I are allowed to joke about it all we want. :-) That's all for now . . .
